Intro:
I am still amazed at how many people ask me about the Cabbage Soup Diet, even when they know what is required of them. Then again... maybe that's why they're asking! Either way, this very restrictive, low-calorie, inadequately nutritious, boring diet seems to have continued its viral tour around workplace water coolers and email forwards because of it's weight-loss claim (10 lbs in a week). But anyone would lose weight if they were required to eat so little (approximately 800 - 1000 calories/day). And, dieticians agree that any diet under 1200 calories/day is unsafe unless under the guidance of a doctor.
Conclusions:
There is little debate in the medical community as to whether this is a sound diet plan. Indeed, it has all the components of a diet disaster. You will lose weight on the Cabbage Soup Diet because you're basically fasting, but you can plan on seeing those pounds return since the majority of the weight-loss is water. This diet plan is nothing more than a quick fix that does nothing to teach you the sustainable healthy eating habits required for long-term weight loss.
